5 Apps That Pay You To Be Healthy

By Elizabeth Kohen | January 1, 2018

New Year, new you! Looking to save money and get fit in 2018? Social dieting, competition, and financial incentives can all help facilitate your weight loss goals, so check out these apps and get to it!

1. HealthyWage

If you thrive with a sense of structure and accountability and enjoy gambling (betting on yourself), the HealthyWage app is for you. You provide your height/weight, how much you intend to lose within a certain time frame, and your chosen bet amount per month. The larger your bet, the bigger your payout. If you don’t meet your goal, you will lose all of the money you bet. While you’re limited to one personal HealthyWager at any given time, you can still participate in team and jackpot challenges. Weigh-ins are done via video or by chatting with a HealthyWage rep so they can confirm your transformation. Winners are paid via Amazon credit or PayPal.

2. DietBet

For a fun and competitive way to challenge yourself to reach your weight loss goals, pay a small entry fee to join a DietBet “game” to compete against other motivated people who intend to lose a certain percentage of weight within a specific time frame. If you win the game, you win your original fee back plus a cut of the prize pot with all the other participants who reached their goal. There are three levels: Kickstarter (lose 4% of your body weight in one month); Transformer (lose 10% of your body weight in 6 months); and Maintainer (don’t gain more than 2% or lose more than 4% of your body weight in one year). Throughout the game, you get to interact with other participants online. For digital proof of your transformation, you submit your starting weight two days prior to the game by uploading a full body shot of you standing on a scale along with a photo of the scale’s readout. Once the four weeks are up, you have two more days to submit your end weight (only required if you meet the goal). You can apply your winnings to the next DietBet challenge or cash out on PayPal. DietBet claims 90% of its participants lose weight by using this app.

3. Higi (Formerly Earndit)

Higi partners with other apps to reward you with points for your fitness efforts, redeemable for prizes and discounts. Just link to apps like Fitbit, Nike+, MapMyFitness, and you’ll be rewarded for your workouts. You get 10 points for every mile you run. Points you earn will be automatically updated, and you can participate in 1-4 week challenges.

4. Charity Miles

If you want to make a difference while staying fit, Charity Miles will donate 10-25 cents per every mile you “walk, run, bike, skip, dance, or do any human-centered activity” to the charity of your choice from a list of 40 well-known charities. You can earn points on your own or as part of a team. The app uses your phone’s GPS and motion sensors to record your motion/distance. Participants have earned over $2.5 million for charity via corporate sponsors such as Chobani, Johnson & Johnson, Mastercard, and Humana.

5. GOODcoins

This app rewards you with GOODcoins for meeting your fitness goals by doing activities like walking, running, or cycling for 30 minutes a day. GOODcoins can be used on earth-friendly products from their shop, or you may donate them to charity. To earn extra GOODcoins, you can participate in surveys or featured challenges.
