Picture it: a warm, sunny summer day in Brooklyn. You’re seated at an outdoor cafe with good friends enjoying brunch, cocktails and the season you’ve been looking forward to since winter started. That’s what we think of when we look at this piece designed by self-taught Brooklyn artist Simmi Singh.
Working primarily with watercolor, acrylic, textiles and layered collages, Simmi’s artwork has been exhibited at venues throughout Brooklyn and Manhattan. Born in Pune, India, and raised on the East Coast of the US, Simmi draws inspiration from her bicultural heritage—her pieces are infused with vibrant colors and intricate patterns reminiscent of Indian textiles.

Art Break is an ongoing initiative that encourages us all to take a break and appreciate art in our day-to-day lives. We invite local artists to submit a piece that reflects their Brooklyn experience, while providing them with a break in the form of mini grants to help them pursue their passion.
Want to extend today’s art break? Take a look back at some of our previous Brooklyn artist features including C.J. Robinson, Zara Cimone and Liliana Rasmussen.
