10 Acts of Kindness by Brooklynites

Last month we posted about how to spread love the Brooklyn way, so we thought it’d be nice to follow it up with some more uplifting news by featuring a few of the many good deeds our fellow New Yorkers have been doing.

Here are 10 acts of kindness we think are pretty cool.

1. Ice Cream Cake via a Warm Gesture

Thanks to the kindness of Park Slope Häagen-Daz employee Farrell Serfer and her manager, Danny Lifavi, a New Jersey pulmonologist on the front line got his birthday ice cream cake, along with a handwritten thank you note.

2. Feeding NYC

Greenpoint production studio Broadway Stages offered their East New York space to Campaign Against Hunger on a pro bono basis so they could feed New Yorkers.

3. Singing Nurse

Brooklyn nurse Janett Perez sings to patients at Maimonides Medical Center in Sunset Park to help put them in a better frame of mind.

4. Neighborhood Musicians

Perhaps you’ve heard a talented musician or two lately as they gave a live performance. Brooklyn accordionist Paul Stein plays upbeat music for his neighbors from his stoop. Opera singer Peter Kendall Clark has also been serenading neighbors.

5. Generous Landlord

Landlord Mario Salerno waived April rent for all of the tenants at his 18 apartment buildings.

6. “What’s Open” Maps

North Brooklyn Neighbors has a crowdsourced map showing what’s open during the COVID-19 crisis. Tastes of Brooklyn also has been posting maps to let us know what’s open so we can support local businesses.

7. Delivering Essentials

Crown Heights Mutual Aid volunteer Moné Makkawi is a PhD student who donates her time delivering groceries and essential supplies to in-need families.

8. Balloon Rainbows

Have you seen balloon rainbows on display in the neighborhood? You have Brooklyn Balloon Girls owner Christina Cartagena to thank for that.

9. Hot Dogs for Heroes

Brothers Michael and Joe Quinn, owners of Feltman’s of Coney Island, have been delivering Hot Dogs for Heroes care packages to those at the front line.
