More about Boerum Hill

More about Boerum Hill

Boerum Hill is one of Brownstone Brooklyn's most coveted neighborhoods, boasting charming tree-lined streets with lovely brownstones and a vibrant scene of trendy restaurants, cafes, bars, and boutiques found on Smith Street and Atlantic Avenue, coupled with a central location and access to multiple transit lines. Boerum Hill shares its borders with a diverse selection of neighborhoods that include Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, Gowanus, Park Slope, and Downtown Brooklyn (and is also close to Fort Greene and Brooklyn Heights). Boerum Hill was named for the Dutch family who occupied and farmed the land. To set it apart from industrial Gowanus, the neighborhood was rechristened Boerum Hill during the first wave of gentrification in the 1970s. Notable past and present residents include Jonathan Lethem, Ethan Hawke, Heath Ledger, Michelle Williams, Sandra Oh, Keri Russell, Emily Mortimer, and Jonathan Ames. Boerum Hill is the setting for two Jonathan Lethem novels: Motherless Brooklyn, a crime mystery set on Bergen Street between Smith and Hoyt streets; and The Fortress of Solitude, set primarily on Dean Street between Nevins and Bond.
