The Coolest Brooklyn Boutiques to Keep You Warm

Sweater weather is just around the corner—though some days it feels like it’s already here. As far as tops are concerned, this fall and winter we’re expected to see a rise in sustainable fashion, blazers, faux fur, fringe, patchwork and puffy sleeves. And it seems tie-dye is here to stay, at least for a little while.

Regardless of which styles you prefer, there are so many incredible independent New York City stores where you can find fashionable, warm sweaters while supporting local businesses. Here are some Brooklyn boutiques that we either frequent or are looking forward to exploring this season.

Something Else BK

What’s really something about this boutique is that it’s a third-generation Brooklyn-owned business that’s been around since 1969. They have two locations and offer a terrific mix of curated styles to appeal specifically to the tastes of Brooklyn residents.

Bird

Sadly, after 21 years in Park Slope, Bird closed its original Brooklyn store earlier this year. But you can still shop at their other Brooklyn locations, as well as online, where you can sometimes catch a seasonal sale with items up to 90% off. Bird supports both emerging and established designers with a focus on local, sustainable indie collections.

The Break

This contemporary vintage store started online and eventually found a permanent home in Greenpoint. They sell sustainable, inclusive, diverse fashions that encourage individuality. You’ll find plenty of vintage sweaters, as well as clothes from up and coming indie designers.

Abacaxi

If you have a penchant for bold color, eclectic styles and ethical production, this digital store is for you. Pronounced, “uh-bah-ka-shee” (the Portuguese word for pineapple), Abacaxi is a fusion of tropical spirit and New York City chic. Slip into a unique, mindfully made, handcrafted sweater and you’ll shine amid a sea of black peacoats this winter.

Bhoomki

The store name, Bhoomki, translates into Of The Earth, so it’s no surprise that they focus on sustainability, ethical manufacturing and diversity along each step of their clothing’s journey. We love their philosophy and their one-of-a-kind styles.

A. Cheng

If you’re looking for a fast-fashion alternative, A. Cheng has you covered. They aim to select apparel that’s “worldly, curious and singular”—a combination of well-polished pieces with personality. What started as a tiny East Village collection showcasing just three styles has blossomed into an expansive Park Slope storefront housing 30 labels alongside A. Cheng’s own.

Da Spot NYC

Another good shop doing good things, Da Spot NYC was established in 2017 by three indie creatives in a 100 sq-ft DUMBO retail space. They now feature more than 25 creative brands by people of color and operate out of a 1,000 sq-ft shop in the City Point Brooklyn Mall, aka Albee Square. In addition to their inspiring clothes, Da Spot partners with the community to host business panels and live performances (when not social distancing).

Alter Brooklyn

Alter has grown from a small Greenpoint store to multiple locations featuring apparel carefully selected from 100 brands and makers worldwide.
