A Leafy, Residential Oasis

Predominantly residential and lined with trees and pocket parks, Kensington offers a mix of housing, from brick rowhouses and detached single-family Victorians to pre- and post-war apartment buildings.

Located just south of Green-Wood Cemetery and southeast of Prospect Park, the neighborhood is bisected by Ocean Parkway—a major thoroughfare that stretches from Prospect Park to Brighton Beach, with landscaped pedestrian and bike paths running along its wide medians.

Church, McDonald and Coney Island Avenues serve as Kensington’s main commercial corridors, offering an array of cuisines, local markets, bakeries and family-run businesses.

Prospect Park Stable (formerly Kensington Stables), the last remaining stable in the area, offers horseback riding programs that take advantage of the park’s 3.5-mile bridle path. Residents can also enjoy easy access to Prospect Park’s Tennis Center, Kensington Dog Run, and the peaceful, tree-lined trails of both Prospect Park and Green-Wood Cemetery—welcome green space for those seeking outdoor recreation or a quiet stroll.

Kensington is home to NYC’s first green library. Opened in 2012, Kensington Library was designed as an environmentally friendly community hub, featuring skylights and floor-to-ceiling windows that fill the space with natural light.

While Kensington may feel more low-key than some of its neighboring areas, its longstanding sense of community and neighborly spirit are part of what make it distinct.

Convenient Kensington transit options include multiple subway and bus lines.
